Kerala Backwaters Guide: How to Plan Your First Trip

The Kerala backwaters are one of the most peaceful landscapes in India: a network of lakes, rivers and canals lined with coconut palms and rice fields. If this is your first trip, the choices can feel overwhelming. Here is a plain-English guide to help you plan it.

What are the Kerala backwaters?

The backwaters are a chain of interconnected lagoons, canals and lakes along the coast of Kerala. The biggest is Vembanad Lake, the longest lake in India at roughly 96 km, which stretches across the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam. Six rivers, including the Pamba, flow into it, and its wetland system was named a Ramsar site in 2002. In Kuttanad, the low-lying rice-growing region around it, large areas of paddy land lie below sea level, which is why the scenery here is so unusual.

Where should you go?

  • Alleppey (Alappuzha): the best-known base, with canals, houseboat jetties and the surrounding village life of Kuttanad.
  • Kainakary: a quiet village in Kuttanad on the edge of Vembanad Lake, far from the crowds. Read Kainakary or Alleppey town: where should you stay?
  • Kumarakom: on the eastern shore of the same lake, in Kottayam district, known for its calm waters and bird life.
  • Kochi and Kollam: Kochi is the usual arrival point, and Kollam's Ashtamudi Lake offers a quieter southern option.

Ways to experience the backwaters

  • Houseboat cruise: a day or overnight cruise on a traditional Kerala boat. See houseboat vs backwater resort to choose.
  • Canoe or kayak: the best way to explore narrow canals and paddy fields.
  • Village walk: the easiest way to see everyday life in the villages.
  • A stay by the water: a resort gives you a base, a pool and time to slow down.

When to go

November to February is the driest and most comfortable time. March to May is hot, and June to September is the monsoon, with heavy rain in July and August. Our month-by-month guide covers each season.

How many days do you need?

Two to three nights is enough to enjoy the backwaters without rushing. Add a night if you want a houseboat cruise as well as a stay on land.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothing and comfortable walking sandals.
  • Sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent.
  • A light rain jacket or umbrella outside the dry months.
  • Swimwear if your stay has a pool.

Tips for first-timers

  • Book early for December and January, when demand is highest.
  • Keep your plans slow. The backwaters are about doing less.
  • Ask your host about local activities such as kayaking and village walks.
