The short answer
The best time to visit Alleppey is November to February. The days are dry and comfortable, with temperatures roughly between 18°C and 33°C, the water is calm and every activity, from kayaking to sunset boat rides, runs at its best. It is also the busiest and most expensive period, so book early, especially around Christmas and New Year.

October: the season begins
The rains taper off and the landscape is still lush and green. You may see the odd shower, but October is a good month if you want fewer crowds before the peak season starts.
November to February: peak season
This is the classic backwater weather: clear skies, cooler evenings and very little rain. It suits honeymoons, family holidays and long lazy days by the pool. Rooms fill up quickly, so plan ahead.
March to May: hot and humid
Summer is the hottest time of year and afternoons can be very warm, with highs approaching 40°C on the worst days. It is quieter and often better value, and it works well if you plan to spend the middle of the day by a pool and be out on the water early in the morning or at sunset.
June to September: the monsoon
Heavy rain arrives in June and is usually at its strongest in July and August. Everything turns a deep green and the backwaters look dramatic. If you do not mind rain and want a slow, quiet trip, this is the cheapest time to visit, but some outdoor activities may be limited on wet days. Late August and September bring the festival season, including Onam, and the famous Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race, which is usually held in August (the date changes each year, so check before you plan).
